Dr. McCarthy is a Professor at the University of North Florida where she has been instrumental in developing the curriculum for evidence based practice to transition the MSN Nurse Anesthesia Program to the Doctorate of Nursing Practice. From 1993 to 2000 she developed and implemented the Nurse Anesthesia Program for the Uniformed Services University which educates nurse anesthetists for the Army, Navy, Air Force and US Public Health Service. In 2001 she also founded the Nurse Anesthesia Program for the University of Maryland School of Nursing.
Dr. McCarthy was one of the first nurse anesthetists to be recognized as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 1994. She has been a member of the Board of Directors of the AANA and past president of the District of Columbia Association of Nurse Anesthetists (DCANA). She obtained her doctorate in Pulmonary Physiology from the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine in Bethesda, MD in 1985 and her nurse anesthesia education at the Fairfax Hospital Nurse Anesthesia Program in Falls Church, VA in 1976.
