This session is a part of the "Focused Rescue Transesophageal Echocardiography for Non-Cardiac Surgery Workshop". Additional registration is required for this workshop. Please visit the registration desk for further information.
This workshop on Focused Rescue Transesophageal Echocardiography for Non-Cardiac Surgery will provide didactic and simulation-based hands-on learning opportunities to teach point-of-care, qualitative TEE image acquisition and interpretation that is specifically targeted for CRNAs working in non-cardiac surgery. The workshop is intended for anesthesia practitioners who desire to acquire initial training in focused rescue TEE to assist with management of adverse hemodynamic events during non-cardiac surgery.
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) represents a powerful monitor to assist with management of adverse hemodynamic events during non-cardiac surgery. Specifically, Category I and II indications for TEE applicable outside of cardiac surgery involve the evaluation of circulatory instability including the assessment of intravascular volume status and biventricular systolic function, and the perioperative detection of myocardial ischemia. For this reason, the AANA has recommended TEE privileging for nurse anesthetists, and the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs has identified basic TEE as a desired skill in nurse anesthesia training. To assist with implementing these recommendations, this workshop is designed to provide didactic and simulation-based instruction in point-of-care, qualitative TEE image acquisition and interpretation that is specifically targeted for CRNAs providing non-cardiac anesthesia. Emphasis will be placed on teaching a useful skill set for practitioners in their care of patients with significant hemodynamic disturbances.
In-Kind Support: Equipment for this educational activity has been provided by CAE Healthcare. The planners of this workshop disclose that CAE Healthcare were not involved in any component of the planning process for this educational activity. CAE Healthcare understands that they must abide by the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) provided policies and procedures. Educational sessions will be monitored by AANA staff to ensure content integrity and prevent bias. Accreditation does not imply that the AANA or the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC) approves or endorses any product displayed, mentioned or used in any of the educational activities.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the sequential maneuvers in a step-by-step performance of a basic TEE exam.
Summarize how to acquire 12 standard TEE views and compare the anatomy displayed in each view.
Identify which views are most useful for focused rescue TEE and compare and contrast the information provided by those views.
