The presenter will share her personal experiences with implicit bias towards SUD, which led to failure to report and seek help for an impaired colleague. This presentation emphasizes SUD is a disease, not a choice, and will discuss the susceptibility, incidence, impact of COVID-19, reporting colleagues, and re-entry to practice. Additionally, the audience will be challenged to investigate their potential for implicit bias and acknowledge their personal contributions to the stigma surrounding SUD. By decreasing the stigma, anesthesia providers can help tear down barriers to reentry to practice, help support colleagues in recovery, and create work environments focused on safety for patients and providers.
