The prevalence of congenital heart disease (CHD) in the United States is about 8 to 10 cases per 1000 live births. With improving surgical techniques and medical improvements, the survival rate of patients with congenital heart defects is increasing, resulting in a growing number of patients with CHD requiring noncardiac surgery. CHD increases the risk of morbidity and mortality in pediatric patients undergoing anesthesia for noncardiac surgeries. Knowledge and selection of safe and effective anesthesia techniques are required to reduce adverse events. This presentation will review CHD and discuss anesthetic techniques to maximize safe and effective care of patients with CHD undergoing noncardiac surgery with a focus on patients presenting with single ventricle physiology.
Learning Objectives:
Review congenital heart disease physiology with focus on single ventricle patients.
Discuss preoperative considerations and anesthetic techniques for patients with congenital heart disease undergoing noncardiac surgery.
