Cannabis Roll Call: Exhale Stigma, Inhale Informative Care (1 Class A CE with 1 Pharm)

Anesthesia providers face increasing numbers of cannabis users that are not readily identified in the preoperative period. Stigma reduction and guided behavioral assessment are essential components for risk mitigation in this patient population. Special concerns that will be covered in this presentation include:
 Ethical and legal concerns associated with cannabis impacting current practice
 4 key stigma domains associated with cannabis use and stigma reduction strategies
 Adoption of an anesthesia specific, consensus developed Cannabis Use and Behaviors Assessment Tool
 Latest preoperative cannabis abstinence recommendations
 Cardiopulmonary risk stratification based on preoperative assessment findings
 Development of an informed, comprehensive anesthesia plan for the cannabis patient

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the role of stigmatization as a barrier to providing informative anesthesia care to patients who use cannabis.
  • Understand how to implement the anesthesia-specific, consensus-developed Cannabis Use and Behaviors Assessment Tool (CUBAT).
  • Identify and stratify cannabis use, ability to obtain informed consent, and abstinence in the preoperative period.
