Awake tracheal intubation (ATI) is an important part of airway management and is primarily used for an anticipated difficult airway. Even though ATI is uncommon, it is important that anesthesia providers (who are experts in airway management) understand patient indications and situations where ATI should be used. Topical Thunder is an ATI technique that uses only topical local anesthetics, and it can be utilized for a variety of clinical indications where the patient’s airway should be managed while awake. This presentation will demonstrate, in real-time on stage, the sequence for the Topical Thunder technique as the presenter safely performs a self-intubation of the trachea.
Learning Objectives:
Examine current research, expert opinion, and consensus guidelines for an awake tracheal intubation procedure.
Identify appropriate indications requiring the use of an awake tracheal intubation technique.
Demonstrate an effective topical anesthetic awake intubation technique live.
