Burnout and Related Wellness Threats: A Quest for Quality Improvement in the Anesthesia Work Environment (1 Class A CE)

Burnout and wellness related threats have been prominent throughout the media and publications over the past several years. This presentation defines and discusses these topics while exploring modifiable and non-modifiable contributors. Both adaptive and maladaptive coping behaviors will also be explored, as well as the impact on individual, organizational, patient care and safety. The presenters will illustrate how to recognize wellness related threats such as burnout and best practice for providing peer support to colleagues. Lastly, one institution’s efforts to identify and address provider burnout and other wellness related threats will be shared.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify modifiable and non-modifiable contributors to burnout and consequences.
  • Differentiate between maladaptive and healthy coping mechanisms and discuss impact on individual, organization, patient care, and safety.
  • Discuss peer support skills for emotional support of colleagues who are experiencing burnout or other wellness related threats.
  • Evaluate one institution’s experience with burnout, identification of meaningful interventions, implementation of interventions & evaluation of impact.
