Transversus abdominis plane blocks are a valuable regional component for abdominal surgery. In lieu of longer acting local anesthetics, Buprenorphine can be added to the local anesthesia to effectively prolong the duration of the TAP block providing analgesia in both the intra-operative and post-operative time frame. Possibly reducing overall peri-operative opioid requirements.
Learning Objectives:
Review TAP blocks including indications for abdominal surgery, contraindications, dosing and duration of action.
Discuss the pharmacology of Buprenorphine as an additive to local anesthesia.
Understand the benefits of adding Buprenorphine to TAP blocks for abdominal procedures.
