Goldie D. Brangman Diversity & Inclusion Lecture: Did They Really Just Say That?: An Exploration of SRNA and Bystander Strategies for Responding to Micro-aggressions in the Clinical Setting (1 Class A CE)

Microaggressions are brief intentional or unintentional subtle snubs, slights, and insults directed towards an individual because of their membership or assumed membership with a marginalized group. These statements communicate hostile, derogatory or negative messages and negatively impact emotional wellbeing and belonging. Common themes include belonging, intelligence, threat, meritocracy (who deserves/ does not deserve a resource). In this interactive session, we will review examples of interactions that would be considered micro-aggressions occurring between student nurse anesthetists and various members of the healthcare team. We will also review examples of such interactions with patients and family members. After presenting these scenarios, we will review evidence based strategies for addressing these incidents in a positive and effective manner.
