Approximately 30% of CRNAs in the United States are over the age of 50. Ageist attitudes and implicit biases against late career/older CRNAs may lead to marginalization, loss of opportunity, decreased job satisfaction, and exit from the workforce at a time when we are facing shortages of anesthesia providers. For CRNAs to remain a preferred provider, it is important to understand the presence and effects of ageism and its potential impact sustaining the CRNA workforce. This presentation will explore age as a protected legal status, myths and bias against older workers, and ways to engage and retain late career/older CRNAs.
Learning Objectives:
Relate implicit bias and stereotyping of older workers to personal attitudes towards late career/older CRNAs.
Apply a multi-age perspective to engage and retain late career/older CRNAs in the workplace.
Review the value of late career CRNAs for their contributions to the profession and workforce optimization.
