Airway and Respiratory Assessment (1 Class A CE)

This session is a part of the "Introduction to Perioperative Point-of-Care Ultrasound Workshop". Additional registration is required for this workshop. Please visit the registration desk for further information.

Clinicians use POCUS to assess for vascular access, aspiration risk, difficult airway, pulmonary function, fluid volume status, and cardiopulmonary pathology. Through the AANA, a collaborative group of instructors coordinated by the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia (MTSA) will provide a hybrid course that includes online modules and a hands-on workshop.

Part 1: The knowledge-based online learning component will focus on ultrasound comprehension and scanning techniques. The core perioperative POCUS procedures include vascular access, airway, gastric, pulmonary, and focused cardiac ultrasound. Each participant is expected to complete the self-paced modules prior to the workshop. The material can be accessed on smartphones, tablets, and lap-top computers. An 80% score is required to receive continuing education credit.

Part 2: The hands-on component is offered at the AANA’s 2023 Annual Congress in Seattle, WA. The four-hour workshop uses human models and phantoms to teach associated sonoanatomy and proper procedural techniques. s.

Upon completion of the online and workshop components of the course the participant will receive a certificate of completion.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the cricothyroid membrane and determine proper endotracheal tube placement with ultrasound.
  • Understand how to rule out pneumothorax post-procedure, assess for pneumothorax, pulmonary edema and lung consolidation.
